    LDraw measuring tools

When I started the LDraw model of the Power Miners drill cone, I discovered that I needed to take a LOT of measurements to get the teeth about right. Converting millimeters to LDraw units added to the hassle, so I printed a few rulers directly graduated in LDU. One idea bringing another, I also built calipers and a depth-meter to complete a range of LDraw measuring tools. You will find below everything needed to build your own.

The calipers. This Technic construction has a full range of 220 LDU (8.8cm), and its vernier allow you to theoretically attain a 0.25 LDU precision. Don't expect too much nonetheless because some play in the construction lessen precision!

    Usage of the calipers.

By tilting more or less the two liftarms you may tune the friction they provide.

This depth-meter is a kind of specialized calipers for measuring depth of cavities in parts.

    Usage of depth-meter.

Print this Acrobat document to create several rulers and scales for calipers and depth meter. It is best to print it on light cardboard. You may also use a plastic laminator for better durability.

Take care to print without any scaling! The scales (in centimeters and inches) allow you to verify that your printer is precise enough.

Use dual side tape to stick the scales on the calipers and depth meter. Stick the long scale first, close the caliper, then stick the vernier with zero matching as precisely as possible the zero of the scale.
